Feb.
2005 After purchasing what the kids lovingly refer to as a
"Hippie Van" we are back on the road once again. With shag carpet on
the walls, paneling and swivel seats, the van is also large enough for
us and who ever decides to ride along.
I have decided to devote a section of the website to "Day Trips" around
Arizona. Destinations which can be visited in a day.
We started Sunday, Feb.13th, with a trip to see how the recent rain has
changed our normally dry and brown desert.
I only wish the colors of the desert could be recreated in print, they
are much more beautiful in real life.
And we're off !!!
Come and follow us....
This is Red Mountain as seen from Beeline Highway (87)
Now we see how the river looks after record breaking rain so far this
year.
The Salt River (Beeline Highway crossing)
The normally slow, calm, and clear river is now a rushing brown mess,
much wider then it usually is.
I don't know exactly where this hill is, it was on the way to Saguaro
lake on Bush Highway, it was so green, we had to stop.
This is just beautiful, approaching the lake turnoff from the north.
A little closer to the lake.
Our destination.
Hiking and picnic at Usery Mountain Park.
Usery
Mountain Regional Park North East of Mesa I have more about this park on another page. These
pictures shows a great contrast between the pictures from 115+ summer
days and the now water soaked green of the desert.
Admission to the park for day use is $5. We found out they do take
Visa, if you forget to bring cash!!
Along the Wind Cave Trail (still near the bottom).
Photographer resting... Even in Feb, with temps in the 50's.. we were
over dressed for the hike.
It was hot!!! we should know better!!!
There are many things to be seen. On both sides of this cluster of
little cacti are some sort of holes,
but I don't know what lives there.
I think this guy looks like a turkey or ostrich.. a little nose on top
of one side, big tail feathers on the other.
Just more green desert and a little yellow flowers too.
Most interesting find. A young
cactus watching an old one die. The Saguaro outer skin has shed down as
a snake sheds. The skeleton of the cactus are left standing tall.
This is facing toward Mesa from Usery Pass.
How can we breath in that?
